When buying a new fridge or freezer, check the ‘eco-label’ which will grade the appliance according to its environmentally-friendly credentials.  Go for one
with an A rating and you’ll use about half as much energy as a C rating, so over the lifetime of the product that makes a massive difference.  Make sure the unit is CFC and HFC free – these harm the ozone layer and should be avoided.  In addition, old fridges and freezers should be disposed of with care: they must be recycled and all toxic substances removed safely.
