Holidays
Whilst we haven’t got a table of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly amongst holiday companies, here are some principles to help identify the ethical and environmental credentials of your holiday. Firstly, it’s important to recognise the greenness of staying in the UK rather than flying abroad each year: aircraft cause a significant proportion of the damage to the ozone layer and the increase in air travel is exacerbating that. Staying a little closer to home helps to minimise that impact.
If you do travel abroad, it might be worth considering a donation to an organisation such as Climate Care to offset the CO2 emissions from flying. In addition a large tour operator will be less likely to invest in the local people or respect different cultures, so it could be better to arrange your own holiday so that your money goes directly to local people (and you’ll also have more chance to engage with them and their culture!)
